Sigiriya Lion Rock

Sigiriya Lion Rock

Sri Lanka

Climb the 8th Wonder of the World. An ancient rock fortress and palace ruin surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures

Rising dramatically from the central plains, the enigmatic rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka's most dramatic sight. Near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that contains the ruins of an ancient civilization, thought to be once the epicenter of the short-lived kingdom of Kassapa.

The Climb The climb to the summit is an adventure in itself. You will pass through the 'Lion Paws'—the giant stone remains of a massive lion statue that once guarded the entrance. As you ascend, you are treated to sweeping views of the jungle below.

The Frescoes Halfway up the rock, a sheltered gallery in the sheer rock face holds the Sigiriya Frescoes—ancient paintings of maidens that have retained their vibrant colors for over 1,500 years.

The Mirror Wall Don't miss the Mirror Wall, a masonry wall so well-polished that the King could once see himself in it. It is now covered in verses scribbled by visitors dating back to the 8th century, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Best Time to Visit The best time to climb is early morning (around 7:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:30 PM) to avoid the midday heat and crowds. The site is open daily from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
